The Last Mile has risen and will continue to rise in importance for retailers. The speed of getting products from the warehouse/distribution center into the hands of customers is a critical competitive element. Given this, retailers are looking for distribution space closer and closer to their consumers. With higher demand, and limited space, the trend now is to go up. Multi-story warehouses, uncommon in the U.S. until recently, is growing in popularity. Building higher ceilings in warehouses is also in demand. More height means more storage in a lesser amount of floor square footage.

To facilitate the expanded product assortment, vertical racking and need for speed, distribution center operators are turning to robotics.
